Emerald Group Publishing : Cyberbuying In China, Hong Kong and Singapore: Tracking the who, where, why and what of online buying
Knowledge-based companies such as Amazon.com tap clever marketing and information
technology to compete in today's borderless world. Given that e-commerce is a relatively new
concept to the traders in Asia, this survey aims to determine the level of cyberbuying activities in
China, Hong Kong and Singapore by focusing on the who, where, why and what of online
retailing. From the on-line survey, cyberbuying is more popular in Hong Kong than in Singapore
and China. Cyberbuyers are young and aged below 36 years old, mostly male, hold degrees, and
are working professionals in the technical and management areas. They like to buy online
because of the convenience in delivery and ease in purchase. Other reasons promoting online
buying are unique merchandise and impulse buys. Factors deterring online purchases are the lack
of security, the lack of opportunity to examine the merchandise before purchase, trustworthiness
of retailers in terms of delivery, refund and merchandise quality.
