Euromoney Trading Limited : Investors play on as Vietnam founders
Spending a week talking to bank executives, fund managers, individual investors and market authorities in Vietnam throws up a curious feeling of paradox. Almost everyone Euromoney spoke to talked with dismay or at best cheerful pessimism about the country's short-term economic problems but also universally recommended the country as a destination for investment. With a young, entrepreneurial population, a developing portfolio of good companies and a favourable geographical position for regional trade, Vietnam has developed into a country with excellent prospects. The problem is that the curses of hot money, governmental policy tinkering and global economic problems have conspired to make the country's stock index charts for the past 10 years resemble the peaks and troughs of a particularly dramatic mountain range. This is one of Asia's most exciting, but most risky, investment destinations.
